In October 2017, I created a GoFundMe page to raise the money needed to build 75 latrines in Kaonguin-Sanrgo. I did so out of a want to fulfill a promise to my village, and a need to stay connected with the people I had grown so close with during the time I spent in Burkina Faso.
I am so happy to say that as of May 2018, my village is finished constructing these latrines, and they look amazing! The feedback I received from people in my village is overwhelming and heartwarming. While executing this project from afar, it was easy to get caught up in the numerical aspect of building latrines. “I need this much money to make this many bricks to build this many latrines…” When I received the video commentary Ben Ouedraogo captured on his visit to Kaonguin-Sanrgo to monitor the project, I was brought back to the reality of what a latrine means. It is a private, safe, and hygienic place to relieve oneself.
